I need to collect information on a bacteria, virus, or disease for my microbiology class - where are the best places to look for credible sources?

Answer

There are several places to search for credible information on your topic, disease, or condition. We have an ebook called Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett's Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases (9th ed.) that would be a great place to start. The ebook is searchable by keyword. There is an older 8th edition in print on the textbook shelf in the library. That is best searched by index.

Another place to check might be our subscription database for full text articles - CINAHL, MEDLINE or SuperSearch (which checks all of them) would be the best ones. Be sure to check for the common and/or scientific name. For example, cat-scratch disease is caused by bartonella henselae.

Our DynaMed point of care database (found under "D" in the A-Z list of databases) would be an excellent source for learning the history of the disease or condition, as well as the diagnosis, management, prevention, screening, prognosis, guidelines, and more.

MedlinePlus is a web-based consumer health information resource created by the National Library of Medicine. It includes a Medical Encyclopedia and a variety of Health Topics which link to lots of information from credible websites.

We hope this helps and please contact one of your librarians for further assistance. We love to help students search!
